Tesla Devil’s Slide crash: Accused doctor seeks admission into mental health program, dismissal of charges

A doctor accused of driving his Tesla off a cliff near Pacifica in a desperate bid to kill his family has asked to be placed in a mental health program, one that could allow all of the felony charges against him to be dismissed.Dharmesh Patel’s request came as his attorneys claimed during a hearing Friday that the Southern California radiologist suffers from major depressive disorder, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.Such a diagnosis is key to enter into a statewide diversion program created to prevent incarcerating a person for their mental illness. At a July 31 hearing, a judge is expected to lay out the process for the 42-year-old to seek entry into the diversion program. It is a process that can take months.Patel’s claim offered a new glimpse into his possible mental state on the day that authorities say he tried killing his family by driving their Tesla Model Y into the Pacific Ocean.Investigators say Patel purposefully drove his famil...Yellen Had ‘Candid’ Five-Hour Dialogue With China’s He, US Says

By Viktoria Dendrinou | Bloomberg News(Bloomberg) — US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen held five hours of talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Beijing, the first in-depth exchange between the nations’ top economic policymakers as they seek to dial back strains in the relationship. The meeting on Saturday capped Yellen’s engagements on her first visit to China as Treasury chief, a trip she described as a mission to revive engagement between the two largest economies that’s deteriorated in recent years while friction has soared over issues from Taiwan to technology access. The meeting was “candid, constructive, and comprehensive,” the Treasury Department said in a statement. While Yellen raised “issues of concern,” she also discussed the Biden administration’s “approach to seek healthy economic competition with China, with a level playing field for American workers and businesses.”Yellen began by telling He that there’s “ample room for our firms to engage in trade and investment...While out of jail in pending human trafficking case, Emeryville man allegedly assaulted 71-year-old woman

OAKLAND — A woman’s discreet call to a Union City hotel employee in December 2021 describing how her pimp was holding her against her will led to human trafficking, pimping and pandering charges being filed against the 38-year-old man.Christopher Card was subsequently released from jail via an electronic monitoring program but he’s back in custody now after prosecutors filed new felony charges alleging he beat his grandmother’s 71-year-old caretaker. The charges stem from a dispute about another family receiving power of attorney over their grandmother, court records show.At a June court appearance for the human trafficking case, Card refused to come out of his cell, and his attorney formally declared a doubt over Card’s mental competency. The legal maneuver means two psychiatrists must now evaluate Card and turn their report over to a judge by July 28, court records show.Card, an Emeryville resident who also goes by Samir Haseen, has filed a motion for a new attorn...Warriors land coveted forward Dario Saric to one-year deal, per reports

The Golden State Warriors signed forward Dario Saric to the veteran minimum contract, according to reports. That checks off a prioritized box for general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. in his first foray into NBA free agency as the Warriors’ general manager.Saric, 29, is a 6-foot-10 stretch forward who fits perfectly in head coach Steve Kerr’s scheme. In his 10-year career, Saric has proven to be a big that can move the ball in a motion offense and pose a legitimate threat as a 3-point shooter. There were rumors that Saric had his eye on joining the Miami Heat should they land Damian Lillard in a trade, but his seamless fit is likely a reason that Saric agreed to terms on a veteran minimum — which, based on his 10 years of experience, should slot him in at approximately $3.1 million for the season.“All we’re going to be able to have is minimums, so we have to work with that,” Dunleavy said on draft night. “We’re looking at veteran players who can fit into our rotation.
