An increase in bear sightings and break-ins throughout Sierra Madre has some residents on edge, with at least one community event recently canceled over safety concerns.Officials said there have been over 30 calls reporting bears in the past month alone.Residents met with city officials and wildlife experts on Saturday at the Sierra Madre Public Library to discuss ways to approach the potential dangers.Recent sightings in the area include bears spotted in backyard swimming pools, exploring front porches and breaking into homes to enjoy a snack in the kitchen. As bear sightings and encounters become more frequent in Southern California, wildlife officials are focusing on ways residents and animals can coexist peacefully.“It’s typical to see an increase in bear sightings this time of year because bears are entering hyperphagia where they are trying to get 20,000 calories a day to pack on the fat for denning and hibernation," explained Mackenzie Rich, a Human Wildlife Conflict Spe...San Jose State football: Harsh ending for Spartans in Toledo

DENVER — Two four-game series. Two inferior National League West foes. Two chances to make up valuable ground in the crowded NL wild card race. The Giants bungled them both, and their playoff chances are on life support with 13 games to go.An impressive Saturday night crowd of 43,885 watched their last-place hometown squad deal the Giants (75-74) a third defeat in the span of 24 hours, 5-2, seriously deflating San Francisco’s playoff hopes during its easiest remaining stretch of schedule. It’s hard not to draw parallels to the Giants’ four-game set earlier this month against the fourth-place Padres, who took three out of four in a series San Francisco had to win. Those games also took place in front of larger and livelier crowds than the Giants have drawn at their waterfront ballpark for most of the summer. Their struggles away from Oracle Park know no bounds, falling to 4-23 in their past 27 road games — including the past three at a ballpark they had been 19-10 at ...Cal ends non-conference slate with shaky win before Pac-12 gauntlet begins

BERKELEY — Because his Cal team scored the game’s final 31 points, coach Justin Wilcox was able to swallow hard and move on after a poor start that allowed Idaho to jump out to a 17-0 lead on Saturday afternoon in front of 36,810 fans at Memorial Stadium.Wilcox also knows his team’s performance in a 31-17 win over the nation’s fifth-ranked FCS team won’t translate a week from now when the Bears (2-1) open their final Pac-12 season at Washington, which is ranked No. 8 in FBS.“We’re all going to sit up here and say we’ve got to be better. It’s true. Now it needs to be reflected,” Wilcox said. “The size and explosiveness — and this is not a knock in Idaho — next week’s going to be different.”The Huskies improved to 3-0 after going on the road and scoring the game’s first 41 points against Michigan State in a 41-7 win over the Spartans. Washington is one of eight Pac-12 teams that entered Week 3 ranked in the AP Top 25, and all eight will likely remain there for Week 4, too.Quarterback ...Moore, Schlee propel No. 24 UCLA to 59-7 rout of North Carolina Central

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Dante Moore continues to look like UCLA’s starting quarterback, even though his coach doesn’t want to name one.The freshman passed for 182 yards and two touchdowns along with directing four scoring drives in the 24th ranked Bruins 59-7 rout of North Carolina Central Saturday.Moore has started the last two games, but when coach Chip Kelly was asked if it was safe to say Moore had earned the top spot on the depth chart, Kelly said “there’s nothing safe to say.”Moore was one of five UCLA quarterbacks that played, with four directing scoring drives. The Bruins had 614 yards of total offense — including 404 rushing — as they improved to 3-0 for the second straight season going into next week’s Pac-12 opener at No. 12 Utah.Collin Schlee ran for a pair of scores and led three TD drives. PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Cameron Ward passed for 327 yards and accounted for five first-half touchdowns, and No. 23 Washington State breezed to a 64-21 victory over FCS member Northern Colorado on Saturday. The Cougars (3-0) were locked in after their emotional win over Wisconsin last week and showed no signs of looking ahead to next week’s Pac-12 Conference opener against No. 16 Oregon State at home.Ward and the Washington State offense were crisp and explosive from the outset. The junior quarterback completed his first 12 passes — including a 37-yard touchdown strike to Kyle Williams and a 28-yard TD pass to Lincoln Victor — to give Wazzu a 22-0 lead in the first quarter. Victor had six catches for 119 yards with a pair of TDs.Ward also ran for an 8-yard touchdown on Washington State’s opening possession. BALTIMORE (AP) — Gunnar Henderson homered and drove in three runs, Grayson Rodriguez pitched eight outstanding innings and the Baltimore Orioles secured a potentially crucial tiebreaker in the AL East with an 8-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night. After losing the first two of this four-game set, the Orioles (92-56) moved a game ahead of second-place Tampa Bay (92-58) and clinched the season series against the Rays. That means if the teams finish tied for first in the division, Baltimore would win.Rodriguez (6-4) has been sharp since returning from the minors in mid-July, looking like the highly touted prospect he was at the beginning of the season. He allowed five hits in a career-high eight innings, striking out seven without a walk.Tyler Glasnow (9-6) yielded six runs and eight hits in four innings. It was his shortest outing of the season and the second time in three starts against the Orioles he failed to complete five innings.Henderson set the tone right away.
